Gay themed New York disco group formed by Jaques Morali and Richie Rome (originally of the Ritchie Family) (originally of the Ritchie Family). Early hits like "San Francisco" and "Macho Man" were huge successes on the NY gay disco scene. Later, more infectious disco hits like "YMCA" and "In the Navy" had wider appeal - the Village People became the first pop group on the front of Time magazine. Group died terrible death with the end of disco, after appearing in the film "Can't stop the music" pretending to be straight. Further hits in the mid 80's were marginally more serious and successful.
